My name is Jillian Welty and I am an Early Childhood Inclusive teacher here at Kellom Elementary. I grew up in small town Nebraska, but enjoy living here in Omaha. I have family all over the states and love to travel and visit them when I can! I enjoy working out, cooking, and taking care of my friends and families little ones in my extra time! The Early Childhood program in the Omaha Public Schools is based on the belief that every child is diverse and uniquely gifted with the capacity to learn. The OPS program capitalizes on the natural curiosity of children by designing meaningful learning experiences to promote language, literacy, cognitive, physical and social/emotional development, in a safe and secure environment. Instruction is designed to accommodate a broad range of children’s individual needs, learning styles, experiences and interests. Classroom learning will include independent learning, small and large group learning and experiential learning. The purpose of the Omaha Public Schools Early Childhood program is to provide educational opportunities, which enable all students to achieve their potential and develop a love of learning.
We use the Creative Curriculum for Preschool in our classrooms and incorporate the components as the framework for classroom set-up, classroom instruction, and assessment of the students learning. It includes a set of 38 objectives that 3-5 year olds move through as they grow and develop. The curriculum addresses the following areas of development and learning: Social-Emotional, Physical, Language, Literacy, Cognitive, Math and Social Studies. Meaningful play-based learning experiences are provided through the following Classroom Interest Areas and Outdoors opportunities: Blocks, Dramatic Play, Toys & Games, Art, Library, Music and Movement, Discovery, Sand & Water, and Computers. These centers offer opportunities for teachers to teach content as children explore materials. Teachers provide materials to initiate curiosity, discovery, and understanding. Teacher/student interactions in each center, allows teachers to guide student learning.
Our classrooms also use the Second Step Early Learning Social/Emotional Curriculum. Young children who can listen, pay attention, remember directions, and control their behavior will benefit more from early childhood education and be better prepared for kindergarten. The Second Step early learning program teaches self-regulation and executive-function skills that help children learn skills to manage their feelings, make friends, and solve problems.
